A German to Run New UN Mission in Iraq

Martin Kobler, the new UN envoy to Iraq. Kobler, a German, previously served in Aghanistan as deputy envoy (political).
Martin Kobler, from Germany, arrived in Baghdad recently to take over as Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s special representative and head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (Unami).

Much of his work is likely to center on stabilization and development – political as well as economic – as US troops withdraw from the country by the end of this year.

Kobler, a former German ambassador in Iraq, succeeds Ad Melkert, who served as head of the UN mission from July 2009 until August this year.
