BLUE SMOKE: A new monthly newsletter, from PassBlue and UNA–UK, which shines a spotlight on senior appointments at the UN

Spotlight:
Ukraine
May 1, 2022

Welcome to Spotlight: Russia’s War on Ukraine – our latest newsletter. Ever since Russia invaded its neighbor, on Feb. 24, PassBlue jumped in immediately to cover the news from a UN angle.

These reports include the responses of the Security Council and General Assembly to the war and interviewing Ukraine’s envoy to the UN; the director of the Ukrainian Museum in New York City; and the UN’s human-rights monitor in Ukraine.

We also have been publishing smart, prescient essays every week, asking such basic questions as where is the UN leadership?; why Putin wants UN member states to be un-united; and how the war could affect feminist foreign policies.

In addition, we produced an investigation, with original photos, on how the repatriation of Ukrainian peacekeepers and their precious helicopters from the UN mission in the Congo could hurt that huge operation in Central Africa.

We look forward to your comments as we stay abreast of UN-related news on the war, including through our weekly summaries. – Dulcie Leimbach, editor
